November 7, 2009 Meeting Minutes – Desert Woodcrafters Association

Meeting called to order 9:02 a.m. , by President Clem McLay at Raytheon Woodchipers Clubhouse.

 

Financial report submitted by Treasurer Terry Glover, read by President Clem McLay

Ending Balance $1,478.82                      available  Balance $1,238.82

 

 22 members, 2  guests were present.  (Ken Green, guest of John Cook and Beau Alexander, guest of Frank Pickett)

 

The 50/50  ($41.00) won by guest, Ken Green

 

The Bring Back: (two-in-one Humming bird/Jackass, made by Wayne Norman) won by Cathy Addison.

Minutes for October meeting were approved as published.                                                     

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Ë Oct. 31st Fall Fling Report

40 people attended, including 19 Desert Woodcrafter members & spouses.

Show & Tell:

1.    Ivan Hanna – Bird houses & weed pots (Arborvitae and Aspen wood)

2.    Frank Pickett – Children’s toys made from recycled church pews; Turned bowl filled with turned wooden balls of various sizes.

3.    Two members of the Rancho Vistoso Club showed a pick-up truck and jewelry box made of salvaged Kokadua wainscoating, which is an endangered species.

4.    Bob Erickson – “In-and-Out” turned flower vases.

 

Thanks to:

·         Frank Pickett for donating cement mixer lamp (auctioned for $45.00)

·         Jim Koewn for bringing the donated Shopsmith (auctioned for $1.00)

·         Clem McLay for donating cash door prizes

·         Bob Erickson for donating cans of wood stripper & finishes

·         Sun City Café for catering the delicious meal

·         Rancho Vistoso woodworkers who demonstrated the Saw Stop

OLD BUSINESS –continued:

Ë We had a lengthy discussion on table saws and safety

 

Ë Christmas Toy Project:  Frank Pickett reminded us –Only one more month to work on toys. 

·         Deadline December 5th meeting

·         You can also deliver them to Frank or if you’re on the Northwest side, deliver to Paul Swane

·         900 toys have been completed to date.

·         If you need more wheels, call Frank Pickett at 546-7646

·         No change on the Safety Law

 

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Ë Christmas Party with SAZWA will be on December 19, 2009 at 655 N Craycroft.

Sam Scalzo reported:

·         To be catered by Dave’s Barbeque

·         Need list of attendance and payment of $12 per person by December 5th.

·         Gift Exchange: - Gift must be handmade (e.g. Nothing “made in China, Taiwan, Japan, purchased in $$ Store etc”) and wrapped.

·         Door prizes will be presented

 

Ë The Raytheon Woodchipers Clubhouse will not be available next year.  All of the club’s property needs to be removed from this building, and we will have to find a new meeting place beginning January, 2010. 

Ë Terry Glover made a motion to have a committee to check with local libraries and industrial facilities to have our monthly meetings. Motion seconded by Bob Erickson.  Motion passed. 

Committee members: Bob Erickson, Ivan Hanna, Jim Koewn, Clem McLay, Denise Omdahl and Cathy Addison.

Ë Terry also brought up the fact that if we are going to rent a place for our meetings, it will be necessary to have liability insurance. Desert Woodcrafters has a certificate of liability insurance by Travelers, under the American Association of Woodturners.  (AAW provides the insurance for members).

 

Ë Terry Glover made a motion to have a White Elephant sale of equipment at the December 5th meeting.  Seconded by Paul Swane.  Motion passed.

·         Be sure to bring your items for sale to the meeting on Saturday.

 

Ë 2010 FALL FLING - Bob Erickson will reserve Rancho Vistoso Clubhouse

 

SHOW AND TELL:

Nine members participated.        $25.00 Drawing was won  by:  Clem McLay

1.    Ken Tower – 2 turned mesquite gavels & plates. (Good beginners project) Donated one set us.

Magazine article about the life of famous woodworker, author, James Krenov, who passed away on September 9, 2009.

2.    Ivan Hanna- Dial guage

3.    Stan Ries – Scroll saw clock frame with stand. (Sonoran cedar wood)

4.    Frank Pickett – Spiral walnut basket. Set saw at approx. 6*, depending on thickness of the wood.

5.    George Sample – Round keepsake box – Red cedar and poplar

6.    Paul Swane – Turned silver maple bowl. (Turned wet, so has a unique shape. Used Mahoney’s oil and Beall System)

7.    Clem McLay – Red oak, Maple, Corian & Pine wood spinning tops with handle.

8.    Herb WinklerBird Houses – Square keepsake boxes – Piece of wood he “found”.

9.    Sam Scalzo – Ball and socket toy

 

If there were items for sale, or woodworking challenges & solutions, I can’t find any notes on them.
