October 3, 2009 Meeting Minutes – Desert Woodcrafters Association

 

Meeting called to order 9:05 a.m. , by President Clem McLay at Raytheon Woodchipers Clubhouse.

Financial report submitted by Treasurer Terry Glover, read by President Clem McLay

Ending Balance $1518.63                      available $1518.63

 

 25 members and 3  guests were present. (Guests Deane Erickson, Ken Green and Tom Damron)

 

The 50/50  ($38.00) won by Ivan Hanna

 

The Bring Back: (a keepsake box made by Stan Reis) was won by Wayne Norman

Minutes for September meeting were incorrect.  Show & Tell:                            Sam Scalzo made the keepsake boxes that were described as made by Ivan Hanna. Sam, I apologize for the error.                                                                        Motion by Paul Swane to correct September minutes. Seconded by Sam Scalzo.

 

Several members were unable to open the September Minutes attachment on their emails.  I received a few suggestions that should be helpful in future delivery. (Time will tell if I absorbed the information.)

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Fall Fling will be held on Saturday, October 31st at Rancho Vistoso Clubhouse.

·         9:00 – Coffee (furnished) Bob Erickson will bring cookies.

·         10:00 – Noon -- Demonstrations to be given by Clem McLay and Denise Omdahl

·         Noon – Beef and/or chicken entrée ($15.00) – Contact Bob Erickson to sign up.

·         Auction following lunch

Jim McKeown has the Shopsmith that was donated to Desert Woodcrafters.  This will be auctioned off after lunch.  (Jim is willing to deliver it -within a reasonable distance).

 

Sam Scalzo suggested that we consider a more central location for the Fall Fling next year.  Discussion was held, but no motion was made, and no action was taken.

 

Christmas Toy Project:  Frank Pickett reminded us --Two more months to work on toys. 

·         Deadline will be the beginning of December.

·         Several boxes of completed toys were brought in. 

·         Boxes of wheels were donated by Dick Kratz and Richard Grau

·         If you need more wheels, call Frank Pickett at 546-7646

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Christmas Party with SAZWA will be on December 19, 2009 at 655 N Craycroft.

Sam Scalzo reported:

·         Will be catered by Dave’s Barbeque – Price to be announced.

·         Gift Exchange: - Gift must be handmade (e.g. Nothing “made in China, Taiwan, Japan, purchased in $$ Store etc”) and wrapped.

 

Motion by Paul Swane, Seconded by Denise Omdahl to have Secretary mail letters to woodworking suppliers/vendors asking for donations of products or gift certificates to be given away to members at our Christmas party.   All members voted in favor.  Motion passed.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR 2010:

 

Motion by Sam Scalzo, Seconded by George Lewis to suspend the bylaws that require a nominating committee for candidates, and have the current officers serve another term. 

            Clem Mclay agreed to serve another year as president.

            Denise Omdahl agreed to serve another year as vice-president.

            Terry Glover agreed to serve another year as Treasurer

            Cathy Addison agreed to serve another year as Secretary

All members voted in favor.  Motion passed  

 

SHOW AND TELL:

# 10  members participated.        $25.00 Drawing was won  by: Cathy Addison

 

1.    Ken Tower – Three turned angels (Walnut, Mesquite and Palo Verde w/ash halo) Says Palo Verde was very stinky but has beautiful contrast grain and the worms made very “holy” wings)

 

2.    Mike Phillips-Souvenir tile; Framed with scrap wood to use as a hot plate.  (Great as gifts)

 

3.    Stan Ries – Large Cherry & walnut Clam shell (serving bowl/plate or wall hanging) Used router only

 

4.    Frank Pickett -Clock Intarsia scene. Adapted from a “pin hole” photo of Roosevelt Island. Hours marked with axel pegs cut & stained, using method presented by Ken in his demo a couple months ago.

 

5.    George Lewis –Curly Maple angel.  Eucalyptus keepsake box with contrasting finial

 

6.    Dennis Minkel- Crawling, climbing skeleton Halloween decoration (cut out using scroll saw). Turned Awl handle. Pen

 

7.    Denise Omdahl – Two turned Christmas ornaments with gold trim. Says she got carried away with sanding, so they ended up being smaller and with more rounded outline.

 

8.    Sam Scalzo Three turned bottle stoppers (Mesquite, turquoise inlay, one topped with his wife’s earring) Makes Mesquite keepsake boxes and bottle stoppers for sale in gift shop in Tumacacori.

 

9.    Clem McLay- Wooden name plate wired with LED lights.  Combined his love of wood & lights

 

10. Cathy Addison – Antique hand drill (purchased at garage sale for $1.00)

 

FOR SALE:

 

Wood Chippers Club has various books and magazines for sale

 

Terry Glover has:

·         Sears Shaper 1/2 horse w/Rolling base for 95.00 OBO.

·         Grizzly lathe -- $750

 

Rancho Vistoso has two 3HP Delta table saws

 

WOODWORKING CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS:

 

If wood is wormy, put in bucket of water, weight it down and allow to soak for six months. (The worms will drown). Then allow the wood to dry out for another six months or so.

Or allow wood to freeze.  (in Tucson you’ll probably have to put it in the freezer)

 

Paint ends of wood with latex paint to prevent drying and splitting.
