Meeting Minutes  Desert Woodcrafters Association – Feb. 7, 2009

 

The meeting called to order at 9:05 a.m. by President Clem McLay, at the Raytheon Woodchippers clubhouse.  24 members and 3 guests were in attendance. (Guests Joe Bonaporte, Cindy Quinn and Bob Southard).

 

Minutes for January 10, 2009 were approved as published. Motion by Dennis Minikel, seconded by Sam Scalzo.  Passed

 

The 50/50 ($41.00) was won by Terry Glover.

 

The Bring Back , a pen turned by Jim Keown, was won by Clem McLay.

 

Show & Tell -  13 members participated. Won by Dan Williams

Items shown were:

1.      Stan Ries- Open segmented fruit bowl and sugar bowl (Blood wood, Spanish satin wood & Holly)

2.      Herb Winkler – Felt lined wooden box with tray. (using scrap wood)

3.      Ron Southard:  Simple box (cherry wood)

4.      Dennis Minikel:  Hollow form turned bowl (Mesquite)

5.      Jim Keown:  Bloodwood pen

6.      George Sample:  Clock (Oak, walnut, poplar)  Scroll saw star

7.      Cathy Addison:  Fish jigsaw puzzle (MDF)

8.      Clem McCay:  Scroll saw portrait (Used special computer program)

13.  Gene Rittenhouse:  Cleaned & refinished old wooden jewel box. Wooden pendant.

 

Woodworking challenges and solutions:

 

·         How to stop water spotting on wood.

Solution: Try 2 coats polyurethane & Beall system/eliminate the wax

 

·         How to eliminate stains caused by over-spray on perfume atomizer

Solution: Try bar-top finish.  Mix an epoxy very well & slowly. Use hair dryer to minimize/pop bubbles or blow on it -  Carbon dioxide pops the bubbles.

Old Business:

·         Frank Pickett sent letter to U. S.Congresswoman. Gabrielle Giffords regarding Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 and its Feb 10th, 2009 compliance deadline. (Use of glue, toxic paint, wood, plastic etc by manufacturers of kids’ toys. – and how it pertains to us and our Christmas toy project. Received e-mail reply from her office, which re-iterates the CPSIA, but did not answer his questions.  He was told  Exemptions are being considered”.

·         Before we continue with the Toy Project, we will ask the A A W chapter to advise us who we can contact for clarification.

 

·         Stain Ries reported the router DVD’s were $20 each instead of $25, which saved us $25.

 

New Business:

 

·         2 books auctioned.  Toy book for $4.  Furniture book for $10.

 

Reminder:   The 2X4 contest will be held at the March meeting. Check the web site for rules.  (You are invited to make something out of a 16”length of 2X4. No paint allowed, but burning is ok.   No sack of sawdust or chips allowed. Two categories: Turned and not turned

with three prizes in each..  Prizes determined by lottery.

Demonstration by Stan Ries:  How to cut for segmented bowls

 

(A couple of hints he gave during the demo:

·         Put Tite Bond white glue in Super glue bottle for smaller bead and better control

·         Cut end of plastic stir stick on an angle to scrape off excess glue.
