Demo – Ken Tower – edge banding.

Edge banding is the commercial solution for hiding exposed plywood edges showing on cabinets and shelves.  Edge banding comes in vinyl and wood to match almost any material.  You will need an iron, cutter (chisel is ok) and laminate file, scissors, sand paper and a veneer roller (a wooden block will do).

Break the banding about two inches longer than you need (yes, break it – you don't need to use a sharp instrument for this.  Use the 'hot' setting on the iron; iron it long enough.  Then use the block of wood or roller to apply pressure on the banding until it cools.  Remember it's hot melt glue so the veneer will come off while hot and stay on when cool.  Then use the trimmer to trim the edges.  This gets you close so you will have to finish with sandpaper.  Check with your fingernails for a remaining lip.  Sand until the lip is gone.  Break the ends off with your block and then sand to finish.  If you put the veneer on crooked, heat it until you can peel it off.

You saw terms above like “break” and “long enough”.  They are a trademark of Ken’s demos since he is a minimalist when it comes to procedures and tools and those of you who have seen his demos know it.  And you can’t argue with his results.
