Woodworking challenges and solutions

For Sale:

Gene Rittenhouse – 14 gauge multiple outlet power cord for $10.00.

Wib McKibbin – various items for sale (Wood, Sander, Air compressor for a Shopsmith.)

Terry Glover – Wood puzzle for $20.00.

Alan Crosby, Ken Tower and Ivan Hanna all brought items to give away.

Old business: Ivan has 20 pen kits left for those interested.

Christmas toy distribution: 1,959 toys – tops, vehicles, keepsake boxes, crayon holders - were given to children in the Sunnyside school district.  Frank Pickett thanked all the people who contributed toys, materials and time.  Alan Crosby was Santa, Ivan Hanna helped a lot – does that mean he showed up in an elf outfit?  Frank Pickett brought pictures of the toys.  Terry Glover asked Frank to send a copy of the report to the Woodchippers for PR purposes.

New business:

·         Marie Roberts, also a member of the Southwest Woodcarvers, reminded us of their meeting which is held in the Catalina room at the Voyager RV Park (Kolb and I10) on the second Saturday of each month, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

·         The 2 X 4 contest is coming up in the March meeting.  The rules are on the web.  Remember that you can enter as many times as you wish; a winner will be selected by draw in each of the two categories, turned and not turned.

·         2008 officers – Alan Crosby agreed to stay on as President, Wayne Norman as Secretary and Ken Tower as Demo Coordinator.  Terry Glover was elected to replace Earl Merritt as the Treasurer.

·         A motion to change the bylaws so that the officers’ terms will be the calendar year, not April through March was made by Sam Scalzo.

·         A motion to change the bylaws so that the election for officers will be held in November of each year was made by Sam Scalzo.

·         Since the above two motions affect the bylaws they need to be presented to the membership with 10 days notice before actually voting so this serves as the notice and will be sent in electronic and paper form, as appropriate.  If passed, the motions will be in effect for voting beginning in November 2008 and terms of office beginning in 2009.

The meeting adjourned at 10:30.

Demo – Frank Pickett presented examples of woodworking projects we can actually wear.  Items included Cabochons used in belt buckles and bolo ties; tie tacks; a regular tie made of hinged wood; a bow tie.  Frank uses his imagination to match pieces of wood to come up with a decorative design.  To make his wood tie he cut the wood to thickness and in a rectangular shape.  Then he drilled 1/8” holes parallel to the surface of the tie where the hinges would be.  Next, using a scroll saw, he cut the outline of the hinges on the flat of the wood, crossing the drilled hole.  Once separated, he ran a dowel through the hole to join the pieces again.  Now he was able to saw the outline of the tie.  The bow tie is still a work in progress, consisting of bookmatched pieces of wood mounted on a thin backpiece to which an elastic band was attached.  He said he will not use elastic next time since it applied too much pressure around the neck.
